MEDITERRANEAN AWARDS

In 1996, the Fondazione Mediterraneo instituted the Mediterranean Awards (with various categories) that are granted every year to eminent personalities from the worlds of arts and culture, politics and science and social disciplines, whose actions have contributed to reducing tensions, breaking down cultural barriers and developing shared values in the Greater Mediterranean.

This Award is considered one of the most prestigious acknowledgements in the world.

Various events are associated with the Mediterranean Award, such as the “Euro-Mediterranean Concert for Dialogue Among Cultures” and the “Epiphany Concert” (organized by the Cultural Centre “Oltre il Chiostro” in collaboration with the Fondazione Mediterraneo. The latter event is broadcast by RaiUno and Rai International throughout the world every year on the morning of January 6th).

 

 

The awarding ceremony of the “Mediterranean Award  Cinema 2007” to the Turkish director Ferzan Ozpetek was held on Friday the 15th June 2007 at Multiplex Cinema “Filangieri” of Naples.

The awarding ceremony of the "Mediterranean Institutions Award 2007" and the title of "Ambassador of the United States of the World", attributed to René Van Der Linden, President of the Parliamentarian Assembly of the European Council, ex-President of the European Popular Party, was held on Friday the 30th of March, at the Vesuvius Hall of Fondazione Mediterraneo, in the presence of personalities and representatives of the Institutions.

The Award was attributed to President Van Der Linden by following motivations:
By his contribution and his political action, he propagated the values of dialogue in the Greater Mediterranean area. He encouraged the Euro Mediterranean Politics, especially in order to defend human rights, democracy and equality, at first as President of European Popular Party and then as President of the Parliamentarian Assembly of the European Council.

Fondazione Mediterraneo bestowed the Mediterranean Prize for Culture 2007 to the Egyptian writer ‘Alaa Al-Aswany , author of the famous novel “The Yacoubian Building”.
The awarding ceremony took place on March the 16th, in the Vesuvio Hall of Fondazione Mediterraneo.
During President Capasso greeting speech, motivations for the Prize were showed.

Fondazione Mediterraneo bestowed the "Mediterranean Peace Award" and the title of "Ambassador of the United States of the World" to the Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Prize for Peace.
The awarding ceremony was held at the Sala Vesuvio of FM.

Michele Capasso illustrated the grounds of this prize in his speech of welcome, underlining Dr Ebadi’s engagement in favour of children, in order to make them growing up in a world without violence.

The Fondazione Mediterraneo awarded the Queen Rania Al-Abdullah the "Mediterranean Award for Social Solidarity".
The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini, and the President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, Mr. Michele Capasso, awarded the prize during a ceremony held at the Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome, where the Italian Chamber of Deputies meets.

The prize pays tribute to Queen Rania’s work to promote the education of girls and thus integrate the various sectors of Arab society into the global development process.

The Fondazione Mediterraneo awards the Mediterranean Prize in partnership with international institutions, such as the IPU, that support dialogue and cultural and social interaction in the Mediterranean region.

Last year, for example, the IPU organized a preparatory meeting for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean at the Fondazione Mediterraneo headquarters in Naples.
