MEDITERRANEAN AWARDS

In 1996, the Fondazione Mediterraneo instituted the Mediterranean Awards (with various categories) that are granted every year to eminent personalities from the worlds of arts and culture, politics and science and social disciplines, whose actions have contributed to reducing tensions, breaking down cultural barriers and developing shared values in the Greater Mediterranean.

This Award is considered one of the most prestigious acknowledgements in the world.

Various events are associated with the Mediterranean Award, such as the “Euro-Mediterranean Concert for Dialogue Among Cultures” and the “Epiphany Concert” (organized by the Cultural Centre “Oltre il Chiostro” in collaboration with the Fondazione Mediterraneo. The latter event is broadcast by RaiUno and Rai International throughout the world every year on the morning of January 6th).

The Mediterranean Award Art and Creativity 2009 was delivered to Pino Cacozza during the Ceremony held in the Complesso Museale di Santa Maria La Nova.
Fondazione Mediterraneo assigned the Prize to the Italic-Albanian artist for giving expression to the collective consciousness of the arbëreshe people, a community socially and politically melted into the Italian nation but still preserving its historical and linguistic tradition.

The Mediterranean Media Award 2007 was delivered to Ibrahim El Moallem during the Ceremony held in the Complesso Museale di Santa Maria La Nova.

Fondazione Mediterraneo assigned the Prize to the Egyptian editor for his role of constant leader in the field of Arab World. Diffusing values such as freedom and equality through the publishing of hundreds of books he gave visibility to the thousand voices of South Shore of Mare Nostrum.

The Mediterranean Media Award 2008 was delivered to Alfonso Ruffo, Director of Il Denaro during the Ceremony held in the Complesso Museale di Santa Maria La Nova.

Fondazione Mediterraneo assigned the Prize to the newspaper for his important role specially in the field of Euro-Mediterranean political and cultural informations. With the action carried out it contributed to make Naples a referent point in the Mediterranean, spreading news and reportages on the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Mediterranean Award "Science and Research" 2008 to Antonio Iavarone

The Mediterranean Award for Sciences and Research was assigned to Antonio Iavarone.
The Award Ceremony will take place in Naples at the seat of Fondazione Mediterraneo on the 5th of November. The President of Fondazione Mediterraneo Michele Capasso, the President of MIB (Mediterranean institute biotechnology) Carmine Nardone, the under secretary of the Ministry of Work Pasquale Viespoli and other journalists and scientists are attending the ceremony.
The Mediterranean Award was assigned to Antonio Iavarone because of his fundamental research about the role of some proteins of “Id” group in stem cells and in oncology pathology. This research can increase the possibilities of treatments especially for some typical pathologies of Mediterranean countries.
