LIBRARY OF PEACE

The "Library of Peace" is one of the priority actions of the Fondazione Mediterraneo defined in the Statute since its establishment.
The goal is to promote dialogue and mutual respect in the Euro-Mediterranean region and in the world by promoting the reading of texts in various languages ​​and, in particular, in the Arabic language.
The Fondazione Mediterraneo signed in 2003 a permanent agreement with the “Bibliotecha Alexandrina” and the “Library of Algiers” and collaboration protocols with various international institutions, such as the “Al-Babtain Foundation” for the promotion and dissemination of Arabic poetry.
The headquarters of the "Library of Peace" - named after St. John Paul II - is located on the ground, mezzanine, fourth and fifth floors of the former “Grand Hotel de Londres”, where the Fondazione Mediterraneo with the Museum of Oeace - MAMT is located.
Equipped with about 20,000 volumes in various languages, the "Library of Peace" (BIPA) dedicates a section to children with books for children: from the myth of Giufà and the Thousand and One Nights to fairy tales that find unanimous consent and diffusion in various countries.
The "Library of Peace" is open for free to all on the following days:

  • Monday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.
  • Wednesday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.
  • Friday: from 10 to 13am and from 16 to 18pm.

President Michele Capasso and Jacopo Molinari visited the headquarters of the Foundation "Abdulaziz Saud Al Babtain" with annexed Library of Arab Poetry welcomed by the founder Abdulaziz Al Babtain.
On this occasion it was agreed to create a section dedicated to Arabic poetry at the Peace Library created in 1997 by the Mediterranean Foundation based in Naples.

Senate President Pietro Grasso presented President Capasso a copy of the book on the history of the Senate for the "Library of Peace".

At the presence of Pia and Jacopo Molinari, the president of Turin City Council Giovanni Ferraris, Turin Culture Assessor Braccialarghe and neighbourhood people, has been inaugurated "Sala Molinari" dedicated to the great sculptor.
On this occasion, the memorandum of understanding for the "Library of Peace" in Naples was signed.

The award ceremony of the "Mediterranean Prize for Culture 2006" took place in Algiers, in the presence of diplomats, journalists and "customers".
Among those present at the event were president Capasso and vice-president Arcidiacono of Fondazione Mediterraneo and director general of National Library of Algiers Amin Zaoui.
On this occasion, the memorandum of understanding for the "Library of Peace" in Naples was signed.

On September 9th 2003 was held, at the Central Office of the Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo, the solemn ceremony to award the Mediterranean Award Culture 2003 to H.E. Suzanne Mubarak for the essential role she had played in the realization of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
Among those present were Mr. Farouk Hosny, Egyptian Minister of Culture and Mr. Helmy Bedeir, Ambassador of Egypt to Italy. Mrs. Mubarak was welcomed by Mr. Michele Capasso, President of the Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo; Mr. Antonio Bassolino, President of Regione Campania; Mr Claudio Azzolini Vice President of the Council of Europe, and by exponents of the international cultural world.
On this occasion, the agreement signed in June with the Alexandrina Library for the "Library of Peace" was ratified. SELF. Suzanne Mubarak and the President of the Campania Region Antonio Bassolino inaugurated the Library with its first endowment of 10.000 volumes.
