THE UNITED STATES OF THE WORLD

The MEDITERRANEAN FOUNDATION, since its creation in 1990 immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, has taken as one of its main objectives the establishment of the "UNITED STATES OF THE WORLD": from an intuition of Gustavo Rol.
The activities carried out over the last three decades by the Foundation - particularly in the area of the "Greater Mediterranean" - bear witness to a constant and concrete action that, precisely in these difficult times of war and pandemic, is an anchor of salvation to strengthen the spirit of peace and cooperation between peoples.
The adhesions of men and women, organisations and institutions from various countries contribute to supporting the institutional initiative by pursuing concrete objectives and effective means for the defence of the planet, respect for the fundamental rights of the human person, the coexistence of philosophies, faiths and religions, the fair distribution of goods and resources, the union of science and politics for the salvation of humanity and against all wars.

During a meeting between the architect Michele Capasso and the writer Predrag Matvejevic', the idea of setting up a "Workshop for the Greater Mediterranean" was born within the UNITED STATES OF THE WORLD: the aim is to promote dialogue and cooperation through concrete actions within a coalition of shared values and interests among all the countries that make up the "Greater Mediterranean": the EU countries, those that face onto the southern shore of the Mediterranean, together with those that face onto the Black Sea and the Persian Gulf.
"A great synergy of collaborations developed throughout history, broader and more productive than the wars that have occurred," say Capasso and Matvejevic'. Matvejevic' proposes to hold a conference at the beginning of 1990 on the subject of 'The Mediterranean and Central Europe'.

Architect Michele Capasso was in Berlin at this historic moment. He talks about it with Lilli Gruber - TG2 correspondent - and other Italians present in the "capital" city of the two Germanies.
It was on this occasion that Capasso thought that the dream of the UNITED STATES OF THE WORLD - proposed by Gustavo Rol in 1987 - and of the UNITED STATES OF EUROPE could be pursued.
A few days later, it was his idea to set up a foundation for the United States of Europe and the Mediterranean.
