During a visit by the UNESCO director General Irina Bokova to the Headquarters of the Fondazione Mediterraneo, an appeal was launched by the international committee of the Fondazione Mediterraneo asking for cultural heritage to be considered as a vector for peace and dialogue among cultures and religions.

UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova supports the “Totem for Peace” by Mario Molinari which is becoming increasingly recognised as the Symbol of Peace by Peoples of the world.

The International Committee of the Totem for Peace has decided to donate a replica of the work to UNESCO as a tribute to the added value World Heritage can contribute as a vector for peace among different peoples, cultures, civilizations and religions.

Mayors from the Amalfi Coast received the “Totem for Peace” by sculptor Mario Molinari at the Mediterranean Awards held in Naples.

The Mayors, among whom was the President of the Conference of Mayors, Antonio Della Pietra, took part in this important event at the headquarters of the Fondazione Mediterraneo thanks to its excellent relations with the Mayor of Minori, Andrea Reale, as part of the multiethnic festival at the end of July in the suggestive typical town which on the Amalfi coastline.

The participation of the Mayors from the Amalfi Coast was important in that the Awards, which, were established in 1996, and together with the Nobel are considered to be among the most important acknowledgements in the world. there have been more than 200 award winners, juries from 43 countries and major international institutions among its partners.

There was the symbolic handing over of the Totem for Peace passing from the hands of the Mayors of Amalfi (world cultural heritage) into those of the UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova.

The 6th World Urban Forum organised in Naples by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) also aimed at promoting the role of youths as actors in the development of cities. To this end, on 2 September 2012, the World Urban Youth Assembly dedicated a day to the theme of promoting gender equality.

During the session, President Michele Capasso reported on “Youth Employment, Entrepreneurship and Social responsibility: The development of initiatives for Urban Youth”; at the end were awarded of the titles of "Standard Bearers of the United States of the World" to a delegation of young people from 147 countries.

On the eve of the 6th World Urban Forum, President Michele Capasso, met with the Director General of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and UN Under-Secretary General Joan Clos.
On that occasion, the former Mayor of Barcelona reminded participants that collaboration with the Fondazione Mediterraneo began in 1995 when an international conference was organized with the Fondazione Mediterraneo entitled: “The Cities of the Mediterranean”.
