Mediterranean Awards

In 1996, the Fondazione Mediterraneo instituted the Mediterranean Awards (with various categories) that are granted every year to eminent personalities from the worlds of arts and culture, politics and science and social disciplines, whose actions have contributed to reducing tensions, breaking down cultural barriers and developing shared values in the Greater Mediterranean.
This Award is considered one of the most prestigious acknowledgements in the world. Various events are associated with the Mediterranean Award, such as the “Euro-Mediterranean Concert for Dialogue Among Cultures” and the “Epiphany Concert” (organized by the Cultural Centre “Oltre il Chiostro” in collaboration with the Fondazione Mediterraneo. The latter event is broadcast by RaiUno and Rai International throughout the world every year on the morning of January 6th).

The ceremony for the award of the "MEDITERRANEAN AWARD FOR WOMEN 2017" was awarded in Naples to Ms. Fouzia Assouli, President of the "Euro-Mediterranean Women's Foundation" and women's rights activist.
The award was given by President Michele Capasso, Pia Molinari, Esther Fouchier and the head of the national networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation.
Fouzia Assouli thanked the Fondazione Mediterraneo for this prestigious acknowledgment.

INTERMEDITERRANEAN COMMISSION (CIM) of the CPMR (CONFERENCE OF THE MARITIME PERIFERIC REGIONS) has been awarded the "Mediterranean Award for Institutions 2017".
The prize was presented at the IMC General Assembly and shared with President Apostolos Katsipras and presidents and delegates from the 60 participating regions.
President Katsipras said:"This is a moment of great chorality that fills us with pride and responsibility at the same time: we must be proud and know how to deserve this recognition (among the most important with the Nobel Prize) and restore to our Regions the role of catalysts of social justice and solidarity".

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, inaugurated the State of Palestine Embassy to the Holy See.
Abu Mazen met Pope Francis in the Vatican prior to the opening of the diplomatic headquarters in Via di Porta Angelica: during the conversation he handed over a stone from Mount Golgotha among the various gifts. The Pope instead presented the Palestinian President with the medal of the Jubilee year and an Arabic version of "Amoris laetitia" and "Laudato sii".
The opening of the Palestinian Embassy to the Holy See, Abbas declared,"is the sign that the Pope loves the Palestinian people and peace".
The Vatican State recognised the State of Palestine about a year and a half ago.
At the end of the meeting, Abu Mazen said:"I hope that other states will take an example from the Holy See".
Satisfaction and emotion expressed the President of the Fondazione Mediterraneo Michele Capasso, who recalled the meeting with President Abu Mazen at the Foundation's headquarters, during which the rapid recognition of Palestine as a "State" was hoped for, starting from the Holy See.
“A dream that has come true,"said Capasso," thanks to the "vision" of Pope Francis.

Per l’azione in favore del Dialogo interreligioso e della Pace, svolta in modo particolare attraverso la sua attività di docente dell’Università Pontificia Salesiana (UPS), coinvolgendo giovani di vari Paesi del mondo. Professore Ordinario di Patristica, dal 2001 al 2008 è stato Direttore della Rivista mariana " Theotokos"; dal 2003 al 2005 Direttore dell'Istituto di Dogmatica e dal 2005 al 2011 Preside-Decano della Facoltà di Lettere Cristiane e Classiche dell'UPS. È membro di varie associazioni, quali l'Association Internationale des Etudes Patristiques , la Pontificia Accademia Mariana Internazionale, l'Associazione Mariologica Interdisciplinare Italiana, il Gruppo Italiano di ricerca su Origene e la tradizione alessandrina, l'Associazione Italiana dei Professori di Storia della Chiesa, l'Opus Fundatum Latinitas. Ha curato l'edizione dei 6 volumi di Introduzione ai Padri della Chiesa e l'edizione di 9 volumi delle Letture origeniane di varie Omelie di Origene, oltre ad altri volumi. Ha pubblicato numerosi articoli di argomento storico e patristico, riguardanti soprattutto i Padri dei primi secoli(particolarmente Giustino, Origene, Girolamo, ecc.). Ha redatto infine anche diverse voci sui Padri della Chiesa per vari Dizionari. Questa attività di conoscenza dei Padri della Chiesa gli ha consentito di individuare le comunanze tra diverse religioni e fedi, base essenziale per un dialogo interreligioso fondato sulla conoscenza e sul rispetto dell’altro. Per l’attività in favore della Pace e della concordia tra i Popoli del mondo, svolta alla guida delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice (FMA), in modo particolare dove imperversano le guerre e le povertà: proprio in questi luoghi le FMA costituiscono, spesso, l’unico punto di riferimento per uomini e donne appartenenti a fedi diverse. Madre Yvonne Reungoat, con la sua esperienza di missionaria nei luoghi più bisognosi del continente africano, ha la consapevolezza della gioia e della semplicità nell’aiutare gli altri e nel sentirsi “Famiglia”: un luogo in cui - grazie al carisma di Don Bosco ed all’esempio di Madre Mazzarello - è possibile, quotidianamente, dare spazio a quella “Creatività dell’Amore” che costituisce lo strumento con cui si attua il carisma salesiano, con umiltà e con la speranza nei giovani, futuri realizzatori di una Civiltà della Pace e dell’Amore. La Commissione Intermediterranea è una delle 6 commissioni geografiche della Conferenza delle Regioni Periferiche Marittime che, nella sua globalità, riunisce circa 160 regioni provenienti da 25 paesi dell’UE e paesi terzi (del Vicinato merionale e orientale). La CRPM, assieme alle sue commissioni geografiche, rappresenta quasi 200 milioni di cittadini ed opera assiduamente per uno sviluppo più armonioso del territorio europeo e dei suoi bacini di riferimento.  Euromed Award alla Banda InternazionaleGERMANIA Banda Internationale: in collaborazione con 9 musicisti professionisti e dilettanti provenienti da Siria, Iran, Iraq, Palestina e Burkina Faso, "Banda Internationale" ha prodotto un programma di concerti che unisce la musica dei paesi di origine di tutti i musicisti coinvolti. L'obiettivo di questo progetto non è limitato ai musicisti rifugiati, ma vogliono migliorare oltre alla musica il proprio impegno e l'impegno dei propri concittadini per aiutare la transizione dei rifugiati alla vita in Germania.

It was attributed to the journalist Madeleine Rossi the Mediterranean Award "Medal of Honor for information 2016".
The award was delivered during the ceremony of President Michele Capasso and the president of the Senate Pietro Grasso, present the journalist Paolo Borrometi.
"A beautiful passage of witness-said Capasso - because both Pietro Grasso and Paolo Borrometi were both assignees of the" Mediterranean Award” in the Editions 2013 and 2014.

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the "Mediterranean Prize" was held the ceremony of the award of the "Mediterranean Prize 2016 – Special Edition for the Education of Peace", attributed to the major rector of the Salesians, Don Ángel Fernández Artime, Grand Chancellor Of the UPS, in the presence of the President of the Senate Pietro Grasso.
Considered among the most significant internationally, the prize of the "Fondazione Mediterraneo" was awarded in previous editions to important personalities such as King Juan Carlos of Spain, King Hussein of Jordan, Presidents Anibal Cavao Silva and Abu Mazen, Leah Rabin, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem FouadTwal, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, and others.
In the motivations read by the president of the Fondazione Mediterraneo Prof. Michele Capasso-who with Pia Molinari delivered the prize-reads:
"For the activity in favour of peace and concord among the peoples of the world, carried out by the Salesian family, especially in the places where the war rages: Here the Salesians are often the only point of reference for men and women belonging to different faiths. The rector major Don Ángel Fernández Artime is a true ' peacemaker '; With his role as guide and master of the entire Salesian family-the Salesians, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and the cooperators-nourishes and spreads with humility and complicity the hope in the young people who have to confront life as ' hunters of the positive ' and Spreading the ' true ', the ' beautiful ' and the ' good ' as the foundation of civil, religious and social life. "
The major Rector expressed his gratitude on behalf of the whole Salesian family and Don Bosco for the prestigious recognition, considering it a "prize for the Future": even more imbued with the "Paul" for the Young, "Hunters of the positive".
The ceremony took place during the inauguration of the new academic year (2016-2017) of the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS), in the presence of a delegation of approximately 2000 students from 100 nations and ambassadors from various countries.
The prize awarded is the "Totem of Peace" by sculptor Mario Molinari.

Was assigned to the Magnificent Rector of the Pontifical Salesian University, Don Mauro Mantovani, the Mediterranean Prize "bearer of Peace" 2016 for the role taken by the entire Pontifical Salesian University for the education of young people to peace and Coexistence among different peoples, in the perspective – according to the expressions of Pope Paul VI – of the "new humanism" and of the "Civilization of Love".

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Mediterranean Prize, on 9 September 2016 - at the Museum of Peace - MAMT in Naples- the ceremony was held to award the "Mediterranean Institutions Award" and the title of "Ambassador of the United States of the World" to Elisabeth Guigou, president of the Foreigns Affairs Commission of the National Assembly of the French Republic and president of the “Anna Lindh Foundation”.
For over 25 years committed to dialogue and peace in the Mediterranean and the world, the hon. Guigou has assumed prestigious roles and was also the first woman Minister of Justice with President Mitterrand in 1997. And it is still the first woman to be elected president of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the National Assembly, in 2012.
Collaborator of Jacques Delors at the Ministry of Finance in 1981, Elisabeth Guigou is called the following year to the Elysée to become adviser to the President of the Republic for Economic and European affairs. In 1984, he is a full-time adviser for the president's European issues, which he appoints as secretary General in 1986, head of the strategic administration which guarantees the coherence of the French positions in the negotiations in Brussels. This thorough knowledge of both the shores of the Mediterranean has allowed it to be appointed to the presidency of the "Fondazione Anna Lindh for the dialogue between cultures" in 2015, happening to the Moroccan André Azoulay.
For this dedication to Europe, the Mediterranean, justice and solidarity, the Scientific Council of the Mediterranean Foundation decided to give the "Mediterranean award institutions" 2016.
Diplomats from various countries, members of the Fondazione mediterraneo and representatives of the institutions attended the ceremony. Among these: the Ambassador of Morocco in Italy Hassan Abouyoub, the consul general of France Jean-Paul Seytre, the consul general of Spain Fernando Sanchez Rau, the president of the City Council of Naples Dott. Alessandro Fucito, the delegate of the magnificent rector Prof. Gilberto Sammartino, the director of communication of the FAL Paul Walton. The Hon. Guigou, moved, thanked President Capasso for this honour: "A precious and unique recognition for a life dedicated to Europe and the Mediterranean".
Ambassador Abouyoub has drawn the profile by defining it as "a balance between heart and emotion".
The Prof. Gilberto Sammartino, on behalf of the jury, read the motivations of the prize.
