Totem for Peace
The "Caravan of Peace" stopped in Naples, in front of the "Totem of Peace" dedicated to Pope Francis, inaugurated on 7 June 2025 with the relics of migrants who died at sea, victims of war and children who died of hunger.
There were many reflections in memory of Pope Francis.
“We are pleased to be here in front of the "otem of Peace" because peace is an achievement, every day,“ said the national ACLI leaders, 'and what is happening, first and foremost in Palestine but not only there, is unacceptable”.
For Michele Capasso, Secretary General of the ‘United States of the World’ and President of the Peace Museum, the meeting with the peace caravan was an important moment, which could not fail to make a stop at this highly significant place. To be hosted here, where the symbol of peace has existed for forty years. We do not need to find the path to peace, peace is the path and the way,‘ adds Capasso. ’In forty years, we have often brought together the various parties to build a true and concrete dialogue. At this moment, the “United States of the World” consists of 181 countries and 16,000 civil society organisations, giving voice to testimony as an act of peace. We are creating symbols all over the world dedicated to the mothers of children who have died in war, died of hunger, and to the mothers of victims of the mafia and organised crime, for example, who protect the fundamental values of humanity with their testimony.
According to the president of the Acli Metropolitane di Napoli, Umberto Cristadoro, ‘the arrival of the caravan in Naples is an important stage in the Assisi peace march. Naples is a symbolic city, there are many ethnic groups, genius and contradictions, but peace is strongly rooted there". "Don Mimmo, said Sister Marisa Pitrella, director of Caritas in Naples, "called on us to be peacemakers, to be women and men who can no longer stand by and watch what is happening, but who get their hands dirty. Peace begins in our families, in our country and in our cities. We must build beautiful relationships because peace is not only justice but much more: it is brotherhood. We must all work together so that each of us can take action, through words and deeds, to become artisans of peace, to build a world of brotherhood, to build peace". The reflection of the secretary of the Archbishop of Naples was not so different. Don Mimmo Battaglia "made a very strong denunciation of the hypocrisy surrounding peace, and Father Romanelli gave a powerful testimony on Gaza. There can be no peace without justice, and this also applies to work as freedom, and thus the level of justice and therefore of peace is also measured".
