March 7th 1944. Almost everybody left the small village of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, disheartened by that image of lava coming down from the volcano and covering their houses and their memories. Many of them, proud of their own land, deeply attached to their roots, refused to see their village wiped out. That is how in a part of the community consciousness arouse and a town committee was set up. This book, written by two outstanding scholars, recalls, through pictures and words of extraordinary eloquence, the drama experienced at the time of the eruption and the following reconstruction, arising from a feeling of pride of the people of that place.

AA.VV. ,Magma Editions- Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo, Naples march 2004; format 21x21 (en./it.), pp.121;ISBN 88-8127-034-X (it./ing)

It is positive that, despite difficulties, existing strucures for cinema conservation and dissemination have been further consolidated, and that new archives are being set up (such as the Lebanese Film Archives).

For quite some time now, many other film archives have been involved in film preservation: the Film Library of Morocco, which is part of the Moroccan Film Centre; the Film Library of Algeria, one of the oldest cinema institutions in the Arab world; the Egyptian National Film Archive, a film library established within the Egyptian National Film Centre.
The collection of data and information found in this volume represents an important effort to document the activities of Film Archives in the Arab-mediterranean world; for this reason, the operators in this sector certainly will appreciate this overview presenting how this important structures work, while pursuing the goal of preserving cinema heritage from Arab countries, and keeping it alive.

Enrica Maria Ferrara. Edizioni Magma - FLM Naples (It.) format 17x24 - pp. 187 ISBN 88-8127-017-X

This book traces a new itinerary in Calvino’s imagination, leading us towards a different symbolic landscape : the one of Anglo-Saxon culture and literature from the 18th to 20th century. Pioneers, explorers of new worlds are the protagonists and authors of the stories of this “unknown” Calvino, which flow together like models in his allegoric-fantastic book Il barone rampante. Through a series of possible paths in the network of symbols relating Calvino’s work to those of Defoe, Sterne, Conrad, Stevenson, this essay tells the story of Calvino’s Anglophilia and the political and personal reasons of his public removal.

Caterina Arcidiacono. Edizioni magma – March 2004 (it.) format 17x24; pp.159; ISBN 88-8127-021-8

The voice of the centre of Naples joins the voice of Florence’s and Berlin’s inhabitants to let out an alarm cry about the new forms of urban neglect and degradation. In an increasingly globalized world, the Old Centre of Naples is the soul of the city thanks to its urban and relational heritage: this important resource has to be preserved and shared.
The research directed by Caterina Arcidiacono – Professor of Social and Community Psychology at the University of Naples “Federico II” and Vice President of the Mediterranean Laboratory Foundation – means to be a stimulus for sustainable tourism policies: to avoid the impoverishment of the inhabitants and the devaluation of human-environmental resources as well as of new investments. With this book, the Mediterranean Laboratory Foundation promotes new methodologies for actions in favour of urban liveability, participation and social capital promotion.

The project CINEMAMED, co-ordinated and launched by the Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo, is an important contribution to the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean. In fact, the cinema of the Mediterranean countries is an invaluable patrimony that deserves to be preserved by re-evaluating its nature and its function in the different contexts.
This retrospective of unedited works of Salah Abou Seif, the un disputed genius of Egyptian cinema, belongs to the directors who has so far been able to express the soul of Egypt with images.
