Today he continues to strongly support the Middle East Peace Process and in the greater Mediterranean area.

Commonly considered as “the Poet of Peace”, “the Poet of the Palestinian cause” or of the Palestinian Resistance, Mahmoud Darwich avoided the slenderness of the thematic field offered by resistance poetry, transforming little by little the familiar objects of his lost land into myths, treating Palestine like a metaphor of the human condition. His poetry, already mightily lyrical, lives on an epic inspiration, dispensed essentially through a bright evocation of figures of speech or mythical figures drawn from all cultures. The clever work on the images and the incisive wording, allow Mahmoud Darwich to give back to himself and to Palestine the identity stolen with the promise of peace. His poetry develops, above all, a profound and painful thought on memory, on exile in all its dimensions, and digs deeply in the heart of rejection, of otherness and of death. Substitute of the confiscated native land, the writing is claimed as a principle of existence and even more as “out-life”. Poetry at this stage acquires completely his sense of dwell (bayt). Mahmoud Darwich, with his poetry, promoted peace in the world and in the Euro-Mediterranean area.

First jurist woman in Iran, Nobel Prize for Peace, she stands out for her commitment in favour of human rights, democracy, respect for women and children. Her strong opposition to a patriarchal culture, which across the world and in the Mediterranean denies women’s rights, represents a firm point for a future of peace founded on gender equality. Her action is especially oriented in favour of children, who are the hope of mankind, so as they can grow in a relational, emotional and affective universe without violence or oppression. Her figure of practising Muslim is the emblem of the ancient tradition of welcome and respect of the Other, typical of Islamic culture, and is in contrast with stereotyped images created and circulated by media. Her commitment for the construction of a dialogue through the search for shared values is a warning and a guide towards the common action for the creation of a Greater Mediterranean of peace and prosperity.

Priest at Ibillin, a small village in Palestine, Elias Chacour, Christian, Arab and Israeli citizen, is one of the few living witnesses of a coexistence, nowadays impossible, in the Middle East. He’s a man who, despite the bitterness that the story of his People might cause to him, courageously fights for the reconciliation of the two “blood brothers”: Israeli and Palestinian peoples. One of his challenges is to construct peace never giving up to those who constantly destroy it. His work starts from a school he founded at Ibillin, where 4500 Palestinian, either Muslim or Christian, and Israeli-Jewish children and students learn together. It is in this school that Elias Chacour’s mission takes shape: to construct a land of peace where the sons of God – brothers who today are tearing each other to pieces – can live peacefully together. It is a message of love and an impassioned address In favour of peace that Chacour sends to his Palestinian and Israeli brothers, not to convert them to his religion, but to show them a concrete and tangible possibility to share peace and life. Chacour is “another man of Galilee” who speaks from the depths of his suffering and of his wise experience.

War. Tangle of wrongs and passions, of infamy and greatness. Like a tear in the fabric that – millennium after millennium since the first ancestors at the beginning of the reflection and consciousness which established rules and laws to curb instinct, repress egoism, find a conception of good, link people in mutual aid with general and shared values and made us less transient in the large sea of being, thanks to the persisting trace – hardly renews in the present, perpetuates in the future and marks an identity higher than the biological one. A tear in which, in the struggle of a force against another, the tragically constructed civilization becomes somehow uncertain and sometimes wavering. And there they were, without hatred or partisanship, to witness courage and cowardice, examples of compassion or abuses, of generosity and baseness, without prejudice in search of the truth that each fighter distorts. There, to found on that truth a better understanding of both parts, of the suffering of both, to challenge the opposing beliefs and lay the foundations of a new agreement so as to put an end to hostilities and establish a new, possibly fairer, peace. For this understanding, for this better and more human future, they were there: determined, sparing no pains, without escaping risk. Without any support, except for the distant support from their newspapers which had entrusted them with a mission more difficult than fighting, almost always more obscure. There, unarmed among armed people, serene among passions, courageous without boldness, more determined than fighters. There, always ahead where the battle is raging, convinced and determined. Until the sacrifice, just like Maria Grazia Cutuli and Julio Fuentes whose mutilated bodies and broken mobile phone were brought back to us. But their voice we gather here and their message we repeat in their name are not broken.

Morocco, though having most of its coasts on the Atlantic, is truly Mediterranean. Not only because the Moroccan coast facing the Mediterranean extends from Tangier to Oujda, but also because Moroccan culture is founded on that humanism which has made man the measure of the world: a universal humanism, as emphasized by many thinkers and artists. From the high of Tangier a blue line separates the waters of the Ocean from those of the Mediterranean; and the latter seem to venture to the Atlantic in search of other continents to be fecundated by Mediterranean culture and ancient traditions. This line of demarcation – in the Koran Marajou AI Bahrein – is the strong representation of the attitude of Mediterranean genius to transmit our ancient immortal culture to the whole world: an attitude that H.M. Hassan II has constantly nourished, since His accession to the throne, continuing the action for national unity started by His father Mohammed V. His great merit was to support the democratization process towards which he wisely oriented His Country: this achievement will remain in history the main pillar in His political career. By accepting this challenge, He belied all those who argued that there was an absolute structural incompatibility between Islam and Democracy. By instituting for the first time in the Arab world and on the Southern shore of the Mediterranean the system of alternating democracy, H.M. Hassan II offered an example of pride and hope not only to the Moroccan people but also to all Arab and Muslim peoples. “Your Majesty, in a moment when the highest minds of the Mediterranean give You this Award, we join them, being sure that this high acknowledgement is not only conferred on the most important representative of Maghreb world but also on all Maghreb peoples who, thanks to Your action, may hope in a future founded on peace and on the respect of different identities – Michele Capasso”.

Minister Dini guided the Italian action aimed at preparing and holding the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial meeting on 3rd and 4th June 1998 in Palermo, which restored confidence in the principles and intervention programme set forth in the Barcelona Declaration of 28th November 1995. While reaffirming the absolute priority of Euro-Mediterranean Partnership for the regional promotion of an area of peace and shared prosperity, the message coming from Palermo showed, as guideline, the supportive commitment to contrast and remove the causes of instability of political, economic, social and cultural nature. Minister Dini, by asserting the concept of global stability, contributed to the acceptation of this guideline in an action able to accelerate the efforts for a rapid conclusion of a Euro-Mediterranean Charter for peace and stability. Strictly in accordance with this objective, he supported, as a protagonist, the re-launching of dialogue with Libya also in view of favouring the conditions for revoking the sanctions adopted by the Security Council against this Country. It is important for the dialogue to be carried on patiently by all Parties and deepened with the highest mutual comprehension, wishing to fully involve Libya in the efforts to strengthen peace and stability in the region. In the same spirit as in Palermo and in support of the search for a general pacification of the Mediterranean, the visit made in July 1998 to Algiers gave an important contribution, by testifying the existence of a dialogue for a closer cooperation with a Country so hardly affected by a tragic terrorist violence.

A great figure of European anti-fascism and of the war of liberation in the Balkans, Gligorov is the political man who, by his action and prestige within the Yugoslav Federation, has managed to contain a tragic downfall of other similar regimes in Europe. In his acts and writings he has always defended the principles of human rights, of the equality of citizens, of a democratic expression even when these points of view were absolutely a minority. Under his leadership, Macedonia has fully participated in the spirit and practice of European agreement becoming the cornerstone of a policy aiming at the integration of South-Eastern Europe into the framework of European Union. This Award is meant to acknowledge the clear views, the political consistency and determination, as well as the courage always shown by Gligorov, since the constitution of the new post-war Yugoslav situation, in affirming the same fundamental ideas even when they were not in accordance with current policy. Ideas and principles of which he and his Country have become an example.

To Giuseppe Antoci - former president of the Parco dei Nebrodi from 2013 to 13 February 2018 - for having introduced a protocol for the allocation of land rents, which provides for the presentation of the anti-mafia certificate even for those with a value of less than 150,000 euros.
This "Legality Protocol" was first extended to all of Sicily - signed by all the Prefects of the island - and then implemented by the new anti-mafia code on 27 September 2017: it is now applied throughout Italy. Three years ago, on May 18, 2016, Antoci was the victim of a Mafia attack, from which he emerged unscathed thanks to the armored car and the intervention of the escort.
Defined by the writer Andrea Camilleri as "A Hero of our times", Giuseppe Antoci has proven to be a brave person who, doing his duty, fights the mafia and lawlessness.
For this he is awarded this prize.

To Pasquale Angelosanto, for his daily commitment in the fight against the mafia and terrorism, in defense of the values ​​and fundamental rights of the human person.
His commitment against subversion and terrorism - already starting with the investigations into the murders of Prof. Massimo d'Antona and Prof. Marco Biagi, killed by the Red Brigades, and counteracting the activities of the 'ndrangheta Ruga-Gallace Novella, working between Anzio and Nettuno - highlighted her investigative skills but, above all, her human qualities.
The ROS is heir to the special anti-crime sections of General Carlo Alberto from the Church: and it is precisely to his teachings that General Angelosanto refers to, reminding his Carabinieri to “not stop at the episode, to analyze the context, to reason and move as the 'opponent; not to settle after the first blow, but to continue and dismantle the whole criminal group ".
An example on which General Angelosanto bases his daily action, to which this Award is assigned.

With her life she emphasized the ethical primacy of solidarity with respect to the sphere of utility, acting without ulterior motives to meet every person in need, helping her to respond to those needs that make her poor, marginalized, dependent.
A political choice of commitment to change what can and must be changed by recalling the Constitution of the Italian Republic: not just a Charter to remember or to frame, but a daily commitment to achieve that Moral Constitution, Rights and Duties that it presupposes.
This Award is given to the memory of Luciano Tavazza, so that his work is not forgotten and our common commitment to others is not satisfied with a world that does not want to change anything.

Annella Prisco prefers, for this writing, to narrate the human side of the father, retracing pages of life lived, of family life, accompanied by reflections on the times we live, on how much the world has changed in just fifteen years, the way of communicating and to live.
These beautiful pages of memories fly away lightly and at the same time are veiled by melancholy for the figure of a father, as well as a writer, affectionate and present who has always had a special relationship with his two daughters Annella and Caterina.
Annella Prisco uses the metaphor of the "Sunflowers" writing: "We are sunflowers in the wind, moved by the current of the unknowns, of the sudden change of the scenarios, but with the ability to turn, despite everything, always looking towards the sun, towards a near horizon or far away, but nevertheless welcoming for everyone, in the perennial game of the parts, which is the becoming and the destiny of human history".

Ercolano deserves much more than the bad reputation that a small number of its inhabitants has inflicted on it. The stretch of land linking Vesuvius to the sea initially strikes for the beauty of its natural landscape that foreign visitors, like the great French writer Colette, have celebrated with admiration and emotion. A sort of archaeological vertigo, making this inspired place rival the famous nearby Pompeii, pulses below the strolling tourists. The splendour of the wonderful villas that from the 18th century onwards have multiplied so as to form the enchanted so-called square of Elbeuf behind the Porticoes protecting this almost unique architectural complex, go by before the visitor’s eyes. Therefore the arguments supporting a Renaissance for this emblematic City are quite numerous. We have no doubts that the different events, such as the one that gathers us here to make the Mediterranean Hymn resound inside the walls of this ancient and modern City, will help, thanks to your initiatives, Mrs Mayor, give back the right place to Ercolano, among the cities built on the shores of our Common Sea, like the grains of a rosary for a common prayer Inspired by a Mediterranean faithful to its past, but definitely open to its future.

To the Egyptian publisher Afaq for its efforts, without any public support, in the field of translation and promotion of the book, thus contributing to the knowledge of Arabic culture and to the valorisation of the different identities in a process of real social and cultural integration.

To the Italian publisher Jouvence for its cultural action in favour of translation and for the highlevel scientific and cultural specialized publications for Universities, Academies and for experts of historical subjects. Its promotion and specialization in texts of authors from the Arab world contributes to the valorisation of the different cultures in a process of real social and cultural integration in the global scene.

SECTION TRANSLATORS

Khalil Kalfat for her estimable work of translation from different languages – English, French and Russian – into Arabic, with which she contributed diffusing knowledge of the different cultures and promoting feelings of mutual comprehension and respect.

Adel El-Siwi for his worthy labour of translation from Italian – especially Ungaretti’s work – into Arabic, with which he contributed diffusing knowledge of the different cultures and promoting feelings of mutual comprehension and respect.

Beshir Al Sibai for her admirable work of translation from different languages – English, French and Russian – into Arabic, with which she contributed diffusing knowledge of the different cultures and promoting feelings of mutual comprehension and respect.

SECTION PROMOTION

To the literary artistic circle Atelier du Caire (an award given in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo) for its cultural work in favour of the intellectuals. Its activities, expositions, meetings, seminars, show that the lay culture illuminating Egypt will not pass away.

To the international book fair Galassia Gutenberg for its contribution, through the section “Mediterranea” to the promotion of the cultures and the identities of the Greater Mediterranean countries.

SECTION AUTHORS

To the work “Un ebreo al Cairo”, by the Egyptian writer Shehata Haroun (published by Dar El Alam El-thaleth). This book promotes the co-existence among religions in a geographic area of ancient history. This essay shows that religion belongs to God, while the Country belongs to all the people. The author expressed – with all his personal experience, as a Jewish Egyptian – the value of religious tolerance which brought him to join the Egyptian Democratic Movement. Haroun understood the difference between Hebraism and Zionism and he fought against the confusion of these two different definitions, which is widely exploited by the old and the contemporary colonization.

To the work “Togliete le maschere”, by the Egyptian writer Lenin Al Ramly (published by Dar Misr Mahroussa). A popular story which develops in an imaginary city of the Middle Age. The work is presented in an eloquent Arabic style with some colloquial words. The theatrical text is about the idea of disguise oneself to stimulate debate on this theme in society and its consequences. The narration reflects aspects of the modern society and it is a very courageous work for its intense technique reminding us of the author’s previous works which combine together amusement and reflection.

To the work “La fine è il mio inizio”, by the Italian writer Tiziano Terzani (published by Longanesi), Terzani’s book is an extraordinary example showing how an autobiographical novel, addressed to his son and written as a sharp and amusing dialogue, can be, at the same time, also a document and a historical-anthropological essay about the sense and the roots of the existence. By this book, Tiziano Terzani gives us an authentic handbook on the road towards mutual comprehension among the peoples and the cultures giving a cultural and civil contribution to our age afflicted by the sinister “ghosts” of the clash of civilizations. Terzani is an antidote to the spreading of falsehood.

To the work “La casa delle onde”, by the Italian writer Giuseppe Conte (published by Longanesi). Giuseppe Conte is one of the best representatives of contemporary poetry. He published various collections of poems, mythic and narrative texts. In this historical novel, the author proposes a literary evocation of the great poet Shelley’s poetry and ideals, building an unforgettable portrait of one of the most fascinating figures of the european romanticism. The result of this evocation and research is a novel combining the poetical-literary and historical vision of the author.

To the memory of Pier Giovanni Donini for devoting his life to an intense study of the Arabic-Islamic world carried out without prejudice. He gave a great contribution to the knowledge of Arabic culture, thus valorising its different identities in a process of cultural and social integration aiming to found shared development and peace.

The Island of Lampedusa represents an example of integration and coexistence between men and women of different faiths, cultures, origins. The phenomenon of migration has made the inhabitants of Lampedusa protagonists of a "New Humanism" that Pope Francis himself, in his historic visit to Lampedusa on July 8, 2013, indicated as the only way to counter the "Globalization of indifference".
The Mayor Salvatore Martello represents the example of this humanism: in the meeting with Pope Francis on 10 September 2020 he gave the pontiff a cross made by a Lampedusan craftsman with the wood of the migrant boats and a t-shirt with the words "I am fisherman ".
Pope Francis recalled on this occasion the importance of remaining human by remaining united: “When even in an ocean two ideas that survive the waves meet, something extraordinary can be born”.
In recognition of the capacity of reception, help and integration of the Lampedusans towards migrants, which always manifested itself and even in tragic situations, the juries of the "Mediterranean Prize", symbolically met on 3 October 2020 - anniversary of the Lampedusa massacre in which hundreds of migrants - awarded to the Island of Lampedusa, represented by the Mayor Salvatore Martello, the "MEDITERRANEAN AWARD 2020 INSTITUTIONS".

Dario Franceschini - 2018

La Commissione Intermediterranea è una delle 6 commissioni geografiche della Conferenza delle Regioni Periferiche Marittime che, nella sua globalità, riunisce circa 160 regioni provenienti da 25 paesi dell’UE e paesi terzi (del Vicinato merionale e orientale). La CRPM, assieme alle sue commissioni geografiche, rappresenta quasi 200 milioni di cittadini ed opera assiduamente per uno sviluppo più armonioso del territorio europeo e dei suoi bacini di riferimento. Ha inoltre un ruolo di think tank ed è portatrice, fin dal 1973, della voce delle regioni di fronte alle Istituzioni Europee, Internazionali ed Euro-Mediterranee.
La sua Commissione Intermediterranea, creata nel 1990, esprime gli interessi e i bisogni condivisi da più di 40 regioni di una decina di paesi appartenenti ad entrambe le sponde del Mediterraneo, e li traduce in azioni di cooperazione politica e tecnica in favore della coesione economica, sociale e territoriale e pertanto dello sviluppo regionale, a scala di bacino.
La CIM porta inoltre la voce del Mediterraneo nell’ambito globale della CRPM contribuendo alle sue riflessioni in favore di una politica di coesione europea rafforzata, da consolidare come principale politica di investimento per l’Europa di domani, ma anche da utilizzare come ispirazione per plasmare delle relazioni con i paesi del Vicinato sud che possano avere un vero impatto sul territorio.

Ed è ancora la prima donna ad essere eletta presidente della commissione per gli affari esteri dell'Assemblea Nazionale, nel 2012.

Manifold instruments are needed to support the dialogue among Mediterranean peoples, among which communication is undoubtedly one of the most important. The prize awarded to the weekly TV programme Mediteranneo produced by the RAI editorial office of Palermo, is a symbol of the acknowledgment for a press group that has been trying to meet this need for more than ten years, acting in favour of dialogue and Euro-Mediterranean communication and answering to the appeal for peace in former Yugoslavia launched by the Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo since 1994. Today it is the only weekly TV programme, not just Italian, allowing to watch simultaneously, in a cost-effective and creative way, the RAI, France 3 and, since last February, the Spanish TV RTve. It is broadcast in 11 countries of the Mediterranean Basin and Latin America. Its editorial staff started to produce news services and reports almost two years ago for Rai Med, the only satellite channel, both in Italian and Arabic, watched in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Giancarlo Licata is responsible for both initiatives originated and developed within the Testata Giornalistica Regionale, which has been capable of seizing the importance of dialogue among peoples and the different press teams better than any other national media.

The Awards Ceremony took place at the Town Hall in Krakow on 22 October 2011 in the presence of ambassadors from 43 countries belonging to the Union of the Mediterranean and Members of the Board of Governors from the Anna Lindh Foundation.
This year, the Euromed Award chose the theme of “For Citizenship and for Freedom” and it was accepted by Amr Shaaban, Chairman of Development No borders, who expressed his gratitude for this acknowledgement in addition to explaining the activities of the association.

“Combatants for Peace”, a civil movement jointly established by Palestinian and Israeli individuals, is the Winner of the Euro-Med Award for the Dialogue between Cultures 2009. The Award, which is bestowed and voted by the members of the Anna Lindh Foundation’s networks of civil society present in forty-three countries, recognizes this year the contribution of organizations and individuals in promoting a culture of peace and coexistence in the Euro-Mediterranean Region.

Rima Maroun - 2008
Photographer, LEBANON

The theme chosen by the Jury is “Dialogue through Art” and the Award has been granted to the Lebanese photographer Rima Maroun because she communicates, through her works, a message of peace and coexistence. Her compositions, with life images, even of wounded subjects or of victims of the endless civil war that troubles Lebanon, reflect an unusual sensitiveness, whose highest point of expression can be found in the exhibition “Murmures”: 14 multiple works where children and women are portrayed in front of a wall. A symbol that does not only mean “obstacle” but, above all, a spur to overcome the challenges everyone is confronted with.

Rodi Kratsa Tsagaropoulou e Jan Willems - 2007

The two ex aequo winners for this edition, Rodi Kratsa Tsagaropoulou and Jan Willems, have been working at two different but equally important levels in favour of women empowerment: Mr. Willems at the grassroots level, through his artistic talent and activities; and Ms. Kratsa at the institutional level, promoting equal opportunities policies in the European Parliament and in the Euro‑Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.

Monastery Mar Musa - 2006
SYRIA

The Prize was awarded to the Monastery for its contribution in promoting mutual respect among population believing in different religions and creeds. Deir Mar Musa is a religious community founded by father Paolo Dall’Oglio in 1991. Its aim is to establish and keep up positive relations between Christians and Muslims. In the community there are men and women coming from different Countries and having different faiths who live the mutual experience to share the richness of their diversity through dialogue.

Barcelona Process - 2005
SPAIN

The Fondazione Mediterraneo has granted the ’Mediterranean Award for Dialogue between Cultures 2005’ to Barcelona Process on the occasion of the 10 th anniversary of partnership agreements. Just to emphasize its symbolic meaning, the acknowledgement has been attributed to the heads of the 35 national networks of Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation as auspicious for the commitment to be undertaken by these actors on behalf of the European Union and of the 35 Euro-Mediterranean Countries in a difficult and indispensable action for peace.

to Mahmūd Abbās, Abū Māzen
President of PALESTINE

President Mahmūd Abbās (Abū Māzen) has been the architect of constructive dialogue in the fraught peace process between Israel and Palestine.
Thanks to his commitment, together with that of the entire Palestinian population, he has succeeded in achieving the grant of Observer State for Palestine before the United Nations, laying down the foundation stones for statehood of the State of Palestine, so that it can be free to enjoy its own territory in a spirit of peace and cooperation with its neighbouring States.
As an accomplished negotiator, he has taken dialogue beyond the confines of those involved the Peace Process itself, successfully advocating that the only way forward is through peaceful coexistence both in the Middle East and throughout the rest of the world.

Naples is one of the great capitals, which, during the course of history, has been able to “Think European” and “Breathe in a Mediterranean Way”.
In the new geopolitical context generated particularly by changes in the Countries of the Southern Shore of the Mediterranean, the City of Naples - which has witnessed integration and coexistence among diverse identities for centuries - has taken on decisive role in changing the course of history.
This acknowledgement is both an act of esteem and a challenge so that the City of Naples, under the guidance of its Mayor Luigi di Magistris, can actively “Think European” and “Breathe in a Mediterranean Way” as a city founded on active competences and social participation.

A free and upright woman, Hasna comes from the South of the Algerian Sahara. Daughter of a family of gnawi musicians, she performs pop music mixed with her own compositions, accompanied by electric or classic guitar or by guembri. Her music expresses different artistic and spiritual forms and, at the same time, in a play of background and mutual protagonism, it allows different individual expressions and the synergy of an expert choral quality, producing different rhythms and tunes, where the aim of a common concert is only possible thanks to the motivation of a production where the ensemble is not given by a succession of reciprocally tolerant pieces.
