POPE LEO XIV SENDS OUT A CRY FROM THE HEART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

A delegation from the “United States of the World” welcomed Pope Leo XIV, who, upon his arrival in Lampedusa, immediately went to the local cemetery to pay his respects at the graves of the faceless and nameless migrants, before which he remained to pray in silence and lay a wreath of flowers.
“I was deeply moved,” said Secretary-General Michele Capasso, “when I saw the Pope standing before the burial niches that we set aside years ago for nameless migrants, and then I recalled Pope Francis’s visit, thirteen years ago, at this very time of year.”
This was immediately followed by a visit to the Porta d’Europa, where he met with a migrant family and was met with the powerful image of Pope Leo standing on the rocks facing the sea, where the horizon looks towards the lands from which our brothers and sisters come – those forced to leave their homes in search of the freedom and dignity denied to them.
Pope Prevost then blessed a memorial stone renaming the Molo Favaloro as the “Molo Pope Francis”.
In this strip of land closer to Tunisia than to Italy, Pope Leo XIV chooses to let his words fade away to make way for the weight of memory and grief: he remains silent throughout the first, brief part of the journey. The part that takes him to the cemetery at Cala Pisana, then to the Porta d’Europa and finally to the Molo Favaloro, which has today been renamed Molo Pope Francis. There are no words, no speeches and certainly no proclamations – especially political ones – from the Pope; there is a suspended void, set against the stark reality of the migration routes. This reality is told by the crosses made from the wood of the boats salvaged from crossings across the Mediterranean, bearing no names, dates or faces; it is told by the bowls, hats and everyday objects embedded in the ceramic and galvanised iron blocks of the Porta d’Europa; and it is told by the faces – some smiling, some not – of the twenty migrants brought out today from the hotspots and led before the memorial dedicated to Pope Bergoglio.

A delegation from the "United States of the World" and the “Fondazione Mediterraneo” took part in the celebrations marking the "80th anniversary of the election of the Constituent Assembly and the granting of the right to vote to women".
Organised by the Presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, the event was attended by the highest-ranking state officials, members of parliament and observers.
The Chamber of Deputies gave President Mattarella a long round of applause. Everyone then stood as the choir and orchestra of the Opera House performed Mameli’s national anthem.
“In his inaugural address to the Constituent Assembly on 25 September 1945, Carlo Sforza paid tribute to the memory of the martyrs murdered by fascism – Matteotti, Amendola, Don Minzoni, Gramsci, Carlo and Nello Rosselli – concluding that Italy’s future lay in aligning its interests with those of a peaceful and united Europe,” said the President of the Republic.
This passage was met with thunderous applause.
Secretary-General Michele Capasso emphasised the symbolic significance of the commemoration, expressing the hope that it might prompt political leaders to push for the establishment of the "United States of Europe".

A delegation from the "United States of the World" and the "Fondazione Mediterraneo" took part in the second edition of the "Lisbon Conference", themed ‘The Great Transformation: The World in an Age of Uncertainty’.
Secretary-General Michele Capasso emphasised the importance of the “United States of the World” with its “Constitution”, which has been endorsed by 181 countries and 16,000 civil society organisations.

BOOK PRESENTATION: “A QUEEN FOR HEAVEN: THE STORY OF HER SOUL”

The presentation of Roberto Bonaventura’s book “A Queen for Heaven: The Story of Her Soul” took place at the Museum of Peace.
The event was organised by the Guards of Honour at the Royal Tombs of the Pantheon, led by Eduardo Pilone Poli, and by Luisa Faraone Mennella, president of the “Maria Cristina of Savoy” Cultural Conferences, and was very well received by the public in the Museum’s prestigious conference hall, made available by President Michele Capasso and Pia Molinari.
The proceedings were opened by delegate Eduardo Pilone Poli, who welcomed friends and guests, expressing his honour at being able to raise awareness, through cultural events, of the figure of the Blessed Maria Cristina of Savoy, who is known to few.
Among those present were: Alessandro del Balzo di Presenzano with Valentina Varano, Donatella Dentice d’Accadia, Arvedo Arvedi, Marina de Rosa, Daniela Oliviero, Marina Albamonte della Motta d’Affermo, Rosemary Iadicicco, Tommaso Tartaglione and numerous other attendees.
The author, Roberto Bonaventura, is a great admirer of Naples and its cultural identity; he coined the phrase ‘Napoletani Sostanziali’, which became the title of the literary work of the same name dedicated to those who, despite being born elsewhere, have found a second spiritual home in the Neapolitan city. For years, he has been leading a comprehensive multidisciplinary project dedicated to Blessed Maria Cristina of Savoy, aimed at raising awareness of her through books, music, film and cultural initiatives. In 2024, he presented a film dedicated to her at the Basilica of Santa Chiara, accompanied by the distribution of a special rosary containing, within the cross, a tiny sculpture housing a relic of the queen.
In 2025, he published the book A Queen for Heaven and, subsequently, conceived and produced the film.
Thanks to the heartfelt performance by Father Antonio Vellutino, the short film screened to those present serves as an effective tool for evangelisation and spiritual reflection. The presentation provided a moment of profound cultural and spiritual reflection, highlighting the importance of the figure of Blessed Maria Cristina for the city of Naples and beyond.

18TH EDITION OF THE “MARE NOSTRUM AWARDS”

The awards ceremony for the winners of the 18th Edition of the Mare Nostrum International Journalism Awards, organised by the magazine “Grimaldi Magazine Mare Nostrum” and sponsored by the National Order of Journalists, took place yesterday evening at the Grand Hotel Vesuvio in Naples.
Among the founders of the Awards and a member of the jury was the Secretary-General of the United States of the World, Prof. Michele Capasso, who attended the ceremony.
Presented by the host Massimo Giletti, the event was attended by representatives from the institutional, academic, media and shipping sectors. 
In particular, those present included Javier Triana Jiménez and Khaled Fekih, the Consul General of Spain and the Consul of Tunisia in Naples respectively, as well as Carlo Puca, Councillor for Active Participation and the Image of the City of Naples, who delivered a brief address on behalf of the Mayor, Gaetano Manfredi.
The guests were welcomed by the Chairman of the Grimaldi Group and Cavaliere del Lavoro, Gianluca Grimaldi, and by the Chief Executive Officers, Emanuele Grimaldi and Diego Pacella.
The Award’s international jury, chaired by journalist Bruno Vespa and comprising leading figures from the worlds of culture and journalism, announced the following winners:

  • Gianluca Di Feo for the article “Hormuz mined. Pasdaran mines in the waters of the Strait: ‘We’ll manage the safe routes’”, published in La Repubblica;
  • Antonis Alafogiorgos for the article “Αμβρακικός SOS” (Gulf of Ambracia SOS), published in the Greek newspaper Akti Miaouli;
  • Andrea Margelletti for the article “The sea: a new strategic dimension reshaping the national interest”, published in Il Mattino;
  • Salem Trabelsi for the article “La Méditerranée en première ligne” (The Mediterranean on the front line), published in  La Presse de Tunisie;
  • Agustín Rivera Hernández or the article “Cruceros eléctricos: la innovación ya está aquí… pero todavía quedan retos hasta 2030” (Electric cruise ships: innovation is already here… but challenges remain until 2030), published in the Spanish daily El Confidencial.

The special “Cavaliere del Lavoro Guido Grimaldi” award, established by the Grimaldi family in memory of the Group’s founder, was presented to Antonino Pane, long-serving editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Il Mattino.
The 19th edition of the Mare Nostrum Awards will be launched next September. The call for entries will be available at the offices of the regional journalists’ associations and on the websites www.grimaldi.napoli.it and www.grimaldi-lines.com.
