On the occasion of the completion of the Shrine dedicated to Pope Francis - the "Totem for Peace" by the sculptor Molinari, inaugurated on 7 June 2025 in the Port of Naples - there was a moment of reflection with yet another heartfelt appeal by the "United States of the World" and the "Fondazione Mediterraneo" for what is happening in Gaza, where humanity has resigned, giving way to barbarity, indifference and the use of hunger as a weapon of war.
In front of the large colour image of Pope Francis placed on the Shrine and in front of the shroud of poor Alaa, who months ago saw 9 of her 10 children and her husband killed, the voices of the participants rose high towards the world's rulers to stop a massacre that is becoming a genocide with its 60,000 victims, including many innocent and defenceless children.
In a message to Michele Capasso, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and High Representative for the Alliance of Civilisations Miguel Angel Moratinos said:
"Many governments, including the Italian one, play with the Palestinians as if they were imbeciles and a member of the Italian government even hides the truth when he says that Italy will only recognise Palestine when the Palestinians recognise the State of Israel... They have already done so at the time of Arafat and with the Oslo agreements. Every form of ignorance, manipulation and bad faith must be denounced".
On the same subject today, the Holy See's Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, solicited by journalists on the sidelines of the Influencers' Jubilee event, says:
"The Holy See has already recognised the State of Palestine for some time and the solution is the recognition of two States, living close to each other, in autonomy but also in cooperation and security. It is not premature to recognise Palestine: in our opinion, the solution comes through direct dialogue between the two parties with a view to establishing two autonomous states. Of course, it is also becoming more and more difficult because of the situation that has been and is being created in the West Bank (regarding the Israeli settlements in those territories): this certainly does not favour, from a practical point of view, the realisation of the State of Palestine. I hope that the meetings in New York today and tomorrow at the High Level International Conference for the Peaceful Resolution of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution will bear some fruit. Hunger is being used as a weapon of war".
It is worth remembering that the Holy See already signed a first basic agreement with the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) 25 years ago. Then, ten years ago, it signed a Comprehensive Agreement with the State of Palestine, which then entered into force in January 2016.
The Secretary-General of the United States of the World Michele Capasso read out the heartfelt appeal for Gaza at the end of the meeting and immediately afterwards said:
"What is happening in Gaza is a genocide that is realised through “urbicide” and “memoricide”: that is, through the annihilation of cities and memory. Human suffering cannot be summed up: those responsible throw their responsibility onto others, insensitive to the pain of the innocent victims and the children who die of starvation every day. We cannot stand by and denounce this crime against humanity. Peace is only built with truth, justice and love: without love there can be no dialogue. It is a pity to see the appeals received ignored by the Italian government and the hope is that there may be an awakening of consciences and diplomacy".
