President Michele Capasso and the members of the Fondazione Mediterraneo and its branch offices express their deepest condolences on the passing, at the age of 96, of Don Antonio Mazzi: one of the Fondazione Mediterraneo’s earliest supporters, and a priest, educator and activist among the best known in Italy for his commitment to young people and the marginalised. He had founded Exodus, the organisation which for over forty years has been supporting young people in their battle against drug addiction.
Born in Verona on 30 November 1929, Don Mazzi was educated at the city’s Episcopal Seminary, where he completed his classical studies, before going on to study theology and philosophy in Ferrara. It was in Ferrara, on 26 March 1955, that he was ordained a priest in the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence, founded by Saint Giovanni Calabria in Verona in 1907. From the very beginning, he had focused his attention on issues relating to childhood and adolescence, undertaking specialisation courses in psychology, educational psychology and psychoanalysis in Rome, Milan and Bologna between 1962 and 1965.
